Meet Spot, the robot to hunt you down

OK this is seriously one of the coolest things ever. Frightening and creepy, yes. But nonetheless still freakin awesome.

Boston Dynamics, acquired by Google in 2013, are developing a series of robots designed to help out with future military use. “Boston Dynamics builds advanced robots with remarkable behavior: mobility, agility, dexterity and speed.” More than this short line, information on the company is scarce.

The company has a few different series of robots, each designed for a different “task”. Some robots are large and can carry heavy loads to follow soldiers around. Some are fast and can outrun humans. The newer version, nicknamed “Spot” can hold it’s own when being kicked over.

Spot, weighing at around 160 lbs (75KG) is built to run fast and agile, climb stairs and handle tough terrain. It has an advanced mechanism to keep it’s balance when challenged (or kicked). The company, other than posting some images and videos, have not released public information on specifics of the robot or it’s actual purpose. This is probably due to the sensitivity and the direct connection to the DARPA project and secretive Google-X labs.

The video below, showing the robot walking around and being kicked, is started to get to me. The amazing thing is that I’m slowly starting to feel compassionate towards this 4 legged machine. Very impressive stuff.

Anyone know where I can buy one of these?
